Cecil Gaines was a White House butler for four decades and eight presidents. Through him and his son, who joins the civil rights movement, we are provided with an overview of the African-American 1900s history. Several reviewers think the result has become somewhat brief, since it is such a long period of time depicted, but Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey (Mrs. Gaines) role interpretations have obtained the best reviews.
