Clint Eastwood, who has directed the movie, also plays the coach Frankie Dunn who has spent a lifetime coaching prominent boxers. The most important thing he taught them is a rule of life that governs his life both inside and outside the ring: protect yourself at all times. Since his daughter distanced herself from him, he doesn’t let anyone into his life. His only friend is the former boxer Scrap who manages Frankie's boxing room.
